What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Aviane is a combination birth control medication available by prescription and used by women for pregnancy prevention when choosing to have unprotected sex. It is formulated to stop a woman from ovulating, as well as by thickening cervical mucus and changing the uterine lining. Sperm is then unable to enter the uterus and the uterine lining is changed so that any fertilized egg is unable to attach to it. Taking the medication daily will allow a woman to have long-lasting birth control. You can buy Aviane with a prescription here at Canpharm.

Frequently Asked Questions about Aviane

How does Aviane work?

Aviane prevents pregnancy primarily by inhibiting ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). It also thickens cervical mucus to hinder sperm movement and alters the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation.

How should I take Aviane?

Aviane is available in two pack sizes: 21-day and 28-day.
21-day pack: Take one active orange tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by seven days without pills. Begin the next pack after this seven-day break.
28-day pack: Take one active orange tablet daily for 21 days, followed by one inactive light-green tablet daily for seven days. Start the next pack immediately after finishing the inactive tablets.
It's important to take the pill at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, follow the specific instructions provided with your medication or consult your healthcare provider.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

The action to take depends on how many pills you've missed and where you are in the pack. Generally, if you miss one active pill, take it as soon as you remember and then take the next pill at your usual time (this may mean taking two pills in one day). If you miss two or more pills, consult the patient information leaflet or your healthcare provider for guidance, as additional contraceptive methods may be necessary.

What are the possible side effects of Aviane?

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Breast tenderness
  • Weight changes
  • Mood changes
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting

Serious side effects are rare but can include blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headaches, or vision changes.

Who should not take Aviane?

Aviane is not recommended for individuals who:

  • Smoke and are over 35 years old
  • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Have a history of blood clots, stroke, or heart disease
  • Have certain types of migraines
  • Have liver disease or liver cancer
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Are pregnant

Always inform your healthcare provider about your medical history and any other medications you're taking to ensure Aviane is safe for you.

Does Aviane protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

No, Aviane does not offer protection against HIV/AIDS or other STIs. Using condoms in addition to Aviane can help reduce the risk of STIs.

Can I use Aviane while breastfeeding?

Aviane may reduce the quantity and quality of breast milk. It's generally recommended to use non-estrogen-containing contraceptives until you have weaned your child. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

What should I do if I experience side effects?

If you experience mild side effects, monitor them to see if they subside as your body adjusts. For severe or persistent side effects, contact your healthcare provider promptly. In case of symptoms indicating serious conditions (e.g., blood clots), seek immediate medical attention.

Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized medical advice regarding Aviane or any other medication.
