People who have been hoping for a magic bullet that will help them lose weight more easily may have found it with Ozempic. It is so touted for that aim these days that it is easy to be unaware that it was created as a Type 2 diabetes medication. Weight loss is classified as an ‘off-label’ use for Ozempic, and it appears that now Ozempic may have earned a second off-label use – fertility booster. Have a look online and you may see people talking about Ozempic babies, and so with this entry we are going to talk about why that is.

The place where we need to start is with birth control medications. Some women take them because they want to enjoy sex without the risk of conception, but they may still become pregnant. It is likely that they are not pleased about it. But here is why that is happening and here is the first of 2 ways that Ozempic can make you pregnant. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist drug, and they can interfere with birth control medication absorption. When oral contraceptives are not properly absorbed their effectiveness may be diminished. 

So, some of the time the reason that these Ozempic babies are on the way is indirectly because of the same gastric emptying that promotes weight loss with Semaglutide. The fact that the food you eat leaves the stomach more slowly means they feel full for longer but also that their medication may be compromised. It may certainly come as a shock for women to find out they are pregnant in these scenarios, but that is why it is happening. And of course, by that point it is not as simple as taking a morning-after pill.  

Surprise Fix  

Alternatively, there can be very welcome developments with Ozempic and fertility too. Women struggling with infertility while being significantly overweight may actually have their excess body weight hampering their ability to become pregnant. Losing weight improves metabolic health and restores optimal ovarian function. The connection to Ozempic babies is that women with high body mass index (BMI) numbers may not be ovulating normally in the way they should if they want to get pregnant. 

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) can worsen this, but what can happen is when a woman starts on Ozempic she loses weight as hoped for and expected. Not the time to get ahead of yourself and start talking about Ozempic babies, but what may happen here is that getting closer to a healthier and more natural body weight – including eating differently - will counter anovulation, which is the term used when a woman is not ovulating properly and of course that can mean the inability to conceive.  

If she was hoping to become pregnant and frustrated with her inability to do so then it is the opposite situation! She will be so very happy to finally be able to have her baby and we can imagine that her husband will be equally thrilled. Ozempic babies? It is possible.
